Tuberculosis has plagued mankind worldwide for thousands of years. John
Bunyan (Nov. 28, 1628–Aug 31, 1688), an English Christian writer and preacher,
described tuberculosis as “THE CAPTAIN AMONG THESE MEN OF DEATH”
at a time when tuberculosis case rates had reached 1000 per 100 000 population
per year1. The death toll from tuberculosis began to fall as living standards
(housing, nutrition, and income) improved early in the 20thcentury, well before
the advent of anti-tuberculosis drugs. Despite the first anti tuberculosis drugs
being discovered more than 60 years ago, this “curable killer” still kills an
estimated 1·1 million people each year2;that is over 3000patients every day.
