Book Description
A slightly elevated peribulbar lesion for which physicians struggled for thousands of years is called as pterygium (Sadhu, et. al. 2015). The Greek word for wing is "Pteryx" from which pterygium derives its name. Pterigion suggests a small wing. It is probably because the shape and vascularity of pterygium resemble the wing of certain insects e.g. Hymenoptera (Schwartz, 1960) . At the time of Hippocrates (460-375 BC) pterygium was well recognized and Celsus in his manuscripts described it as Urigus.
