The new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) whose onset of origin for the rst time from Wuhan has spread throughout China and even to other countries around the world. Conrmed cases of COVID-19 have increased to a much higher number than SARS in 2003, and their mortality is not negligible. Realizing its "human-to-human" transmission capacity, the World Health Organization identied it as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 31 January 2020. These facts are sufcient to illustrate the severity and complexity of the outbreak. Given the fact that no effective medicines are available for viral infectious diseases, preventive measures including infection source control, early patient detection, transmission cutting and protection of susceptible populations are paramount. Although medical institutions and workers are the main ghting force against the disease, public participation is also indispensable for rapid control of the epidemic. Therefore, it is extremely important to disseminate relevant information to the public. With that in mind, he joined a group of Ecuadorian doctors to give an overview of the new coronavirus, its prevention, transmission, detection and treatment of the disease.
