Book Description

Laboratory animals play vital role in studying new drugs/vaccines/appliances used in the medical eld prior to Clinical trial stage. They are also employed in testing licensed products manufactured by industries for medical use. Though there are wide range of Laboratory animals, only a few species such as mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits are frequently used in experiments. The use of animals in experiments is governed by the rules and regulations framed by concerned Ministry of the Government in each Country. In India, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate changes has constituted an agency in its fold named “Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments in Animals” (CPCSEA) under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to monitor animal investigations in educational institutions, research organizations, industries and specialized laboratories. CPCSEA is governed by Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying from June 2019. From January 2023 the CPCSEA has been renamed as CCSEA (Committee for control and supervision of experiments on animals) and governed by Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. In short the regulatory aspects are directed towards 5 R viz. Reduction - Renement- Replacement - Reuse - Rehabilitation. Though standard text books, manuals, regulatory guidelines are available for reference, a compilation with chapters and Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.Ps), covering overall activities of Laboratory Animal Facility is a long-felt need of the stake holders. Through this compilation titled “Laboratory Animals and Experimentation”, such an attempt has been made, consisting of Part-I covering chapters related to Animals used for experiments, Animal Facility and Animal Experimentation including Regulatory aspect and Part-II covering Standard Operating Procedures (S.O.P) for Animal House up-keep and maintenance, breeding and maintenance of animals, experimentation etc., as per regulatory norms. A list of references and websites are given wherever needed in the text as well as at the end of all chapters for future reading. It is emphasized that care and welfare of animals are paramount to good experimental outcome. The personnel involved in animal experimentation should strictly follow the laid down norms and ethical considerations in using animals for their research and treat them with utmost care and compassion they deserve.
