Periodontitis is a common chronic infectious disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms that affect the supporting structures of the teeth, resulting in progressive tissue destruction and eventual tooth loss. Diagnosis and treatment planning in periodontitis usually rely on clinical and radiographic ndings. They reect past periodontal activity but lack the sensitivity and specicity to detect current disease at specic sites or to predict future attachment loss.
