Book Description

Despite the research in medical science touching new height, schizophrenia is still remains one of the most frightening and serious of all mental illnesses. No other medical or mental disorder arouses as much anxiety in the doctor, the media and general public. Inspite of the availability of effective treatments patients and their families still finds it hard to access good care. The early observation that the illness is typified by the disconnection or splitting of the psychic functions led to the nomenclature of the term schizophrenia. Unfortunately, this has led to the misconception that the illness is characterized by a split personality which it is not (Picchioni & Murray, 2007).
