Book Description
The key to life is our sense of hearing. In the seventh month of fetal life, the hearing sense gains most of its functions and millions of neural connections begin to develop. In their first months, newborns instinctively begin to train their auditory system with personal voice stimuli. This process paves the way for language acquisition, the most important product of the hearing. The first steps of acquiring a language are taken in the first months of life. These important acquisitions cannot be realized if the hearing is not normal for some reason. The ability to speak and having a langue is a very high-level function unique to human beings. The disturbances here affect not only language development, but all developmental functions of the brain negatively. Early diagnosis of functions related to hearing is therefore of great importance. Newborn Hearing Screenings are the first and most important step of early diagnosis. With a multidisciplinary study, it is possible for children with an early hearing loss to achieve a normal or near normal life standard. A definitive diagnosis (type, grade, localization, etc.) for hearing loss should be made by a professional with a detailed postnatal examination in an equipped ENT-Audiology clinic. The general rule is making a diagnosis in three months and starting a treatment and habilitation program in 6 months. A child with a hearing loss should have the necessary auditory warnings during the age when the brain plasticity is the most intense and rapid. The critical period for this is the 0-4 year age range. Early diagnosis, early treatment (hearing aid and/or cochlear implants) and early re/habilitation is therefore very important. Topics covered in this book include the effects of the hearing loss in children, assessment of hearing, early diagnosis and early intervention and current rehabilitative approaches, and provide detailed information and practice methods for hearing loss in children and professionals working in the rehabilitation field. This information is a source of guidance for families and families of children with hearing loss as well as professionals working in the field of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. We hope that the information provided is going to be useful...
