Book Description
Over the last decade, the world has experienced a prompt growth in improvement initiatives, such as Lean Thinking (Lean) and Six Sigma (SS). In India, Lean Six Sigma was rst implemented in BAE Systems Controls in 1997. There are many well known cases that have documented the successful implementation of either Lean or SS. Lean and Six Sigma promote independent improvements, each with their own unique characteristics. Six Sigma views elimination of variation as essential, while Lean attempts to develop a theoretical or practical link between quality and speed. The publication of the book, The Machine that Changed the World: the Story of Lean Production in 1990 was hugely responsible for the diffusion of some Lean production practices developed by the most competitive auto manufacturers in the world. Thereafter, Lean production was studied in other industries, especially in the non-manufacturing sectors.
