Book Description
India is the second most populous country having more than one billion population. As per the 2011 census, there were 49% of women representing India's total population in the country. Rapid urbanization has resulted in a number of socio-economic problems in urban areas. To meet the increasing and challenging needs of women, there has been a progressive increase in the plan outlays over the past four decades. The Government of India is committed to the welfare of women through empowering them. Women are an integral part of every economy. All round development and harmonious growth of a nation would be possible only when women are considered as equal partners with men in programmes. Empowerment of women is essential to harness the women labour in the mainstream of economic development. Empowerment of women is a holistic concept. It is multidimensional in its approach and covers social, political, economic and cultural aspects. Of all the factors contributing to women's development, economic empowerment is of utmost signicance in order to achieve a lasting and sustainable development of society. (Rekha and Goankar, 2006).
