Book Description
This book is the outcome of a research project entitled “An economic analysis of production and marketing of pomegranate in middle Gujarat” undertaken to fulfil the partial requirements for the award of the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture in the subject of Agricultural Economics of the first author at Anand Agricultural University, Anand, Gujarat. Focus of the study was to study the profitability, vitality and economic feasibility of investment on pomegranate orchard as well as to examine the pattern of disposal, marketable surplus, price spread and marketing efficiency of pomegranate in middle Gujarat. Pomegranate is favourite table fruit of the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It is extensively cultivated in countries like Spain, Egypt, India, Iran and China. Due to its hardy nature, easy adoptability to marginal and wasteland, consistent productivity and nutritive and therapeutic value, importance of Pomegranate is increasing in India. The area and production of pomegranate in Gujarat has expanded in the last decade. Gujarat ranks 3rd in area under cultivation and 4th in production of pomegranate in the country. In the last decade, Gujarat has seen noticeable progress in total area under cultivation and production of pomegranate. The establishment of pomegranate orchard involves high initial investment but at the same time per hectare annual net realization has also been found quite high in this study in early bearing stage and in mature bearing stage. In sensitivity analysis, it was observed that in all varying situations of cost and returns, value of all feasibility parameters have satisfied the acceptance rules for the investment proposition. On the whole, pomegranate cultivation was found highly profitable, but still there was scope for increasing returns by using drip irrigation, water soluble fertilizers, changing planting method etc. It required huge investment in the adoption of certain technologies, so, adequate, timely and hassle free institutional credit can go a long way to make pomegranate cultivation more attractive and paying proposition It is hoped that this book will help the extension workers, policy makers and farmers for understanding the economic and marketing aspects of pomegranate cultivation in a better way. This apart, the book may also be useful for the students and researchers engaged in doing the research projects on various aspects of economics and marketing of perennial horticultural crops. The book has used standard methodology employed by various researchers in the area in a lucid way.
